periodontal disease

The primary culprit behind periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that forms on teeth. If not efficiently removed, it can harden into tartar, leading to inflammation and eventually gum disease.

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums.
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing.
  • Receding gums.
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste.
  • Loose or shifting teeth.
  • Visible pus surrounding the teeth and gums

If you notice any of the above symptoms, it may be a sign of developing periodontal disease. The primary treatment for periodontal disease is called a Scaling and Root Planing. This deep-cleaning, non-surgical procedure involves removing bacterial plaque and tartar deposits on tooth and root surfaces. It aids in minimizing the pocket sizes between the teeth and gums.

periodontal maintenance

Periodontal disease is a continuous battle. In order to maintain the health of your gums, it is recommended that those diagnosed with periodontal disease recieve maintenance cleanings every 3 months as opposed to the 6 month schedule for regular dental cleanings.
